3,500 players are about to sit down at Makuhari Messe

Duel Masters PLAY'S Grand Prix 2026 runs on 13 September at Makuhari Messe, halls 7 and 8, for a field of 3,500. New Division format. Swiss into single elimination.

If you have been told this game ended in 2006, the simplest correction is a hall in Chiba with three and a half thousand people in it, on a Sunday, next month.

Applications close today The application window was extended to Sunday 16 August — today, as this is written. The field was also expanded from 3,000 to 3,500 on 7 August. Both facts point the same way: there is room. If you are in Japan and were undecided, the decision is now or not at all.

Entry is a lottery, then a purchase

This is worth spelling out because it does not work the way most Western tournament entry does. You do not buy a ticket. You enter a lottery for the right to buy one, and only lottery winners may then purchase the Grand Prix Set, which functions as the entry.

The set includes, among other things:

Only holders of an entry right may enter the venue. Side events and a merchandise stand run alongside the main tournament; the product list was published on 16 August.

What this means for the format

The Grand Prix is New Division, the rotating format — not All Division. That makes the current ND metagame the one that matters for the next four weeks, and it is a metagame that has been moving fast.

As of the 6 August list, Lionel decks held three of the five Tier S slots and four of the five Tier S decks had climbed that week. Fire/Light Raid, rated cheap to pilot but the most expensive deck in the format to assemble, took the most recent sanctioned event.

A month is a long time in a two-week-old format. Expect the list to look different by September, and expect a wave of Japanese deck coverage in the fortnight before the event — that is when the real preparation happens.

Where this sits in the calendar

Note the distinction in the middle row: the paper TCG and the digital game run their own separate Grand Prix events, both at Makuhari. If you are searching Japanese coverage, the hashtags are for this one and for the paper game.

Alongside these, the game runs an ongoing competitive structure: Battle Arena (in-app qualifier, online second round, offline studio finals, prize money) and the Grand Master decider at year's end, restricted to Battle Arena winners.

If you cannot attend

Almost no one reading this in English can. It is a physical event in Chiba requiring a Japanese application process, and applications close today.

What it is useful for is calibration. When someone tells you Duel Masters is dead outside Japan — which is true — it is worth knowing what the inside of Japan looks like: a 3,500-seat hall, expanded once because of demand, for the digital version of a game whose English release was discontinued twenty years ago.

The main event will be covered in Japanese. Winning decklists usually surface within a day.
