They are doing it again, and this time Magic is posting too

Two premium art sets built around Magic: The Gathering went on sale for pre-order yesterday evening. Both official accounts revealed cards in turn — Duel Masters showing one set, Magic showing the other, pointing at each other across the timeline.

The detail worth stopping on: a Magic artist drew one of the Duel Masters cards.

The cards shown so far

Tokoshie no Chōjin

From An Invitation to Dominaria. Art by Piotr Foksowicz — credited by Takara Tomy as the artist behind Magic's Ancient Brontodon.

Ōdō Seirei Alphadios

Also from An Invitation to Dominaria. Art by Jason A. Engle, another Magic artist. Two of the three reveals from this set have Magic illustrators — it is the pattern, not a one-off.

Oriotis Judge

From You Are a Planeswalker. Currently a four-of in the most-played deck in Duel Masters PLAY'S — see the Raid list — though that is the digital game and this is paper.

Shinkirō to Seigikan no Ketsudan

Also from You Are a Planeswalker.

Zetsubō to Hangon to Messatsu no Ketsudan

Same set. The reveals are continuing on both accounts.

Why the artist credit matters

The earlier crossover put Magic cards into Duel Masters — Black Lotus, Emrakul, Nicol Bolas — reprinted in frames imitating Magic's old border. That was one game visiting another.

This is not that. These are Duel Masters cards, with Duel Masters names and Duel Masters rules text, drawn by people who work for Magic — two named so far, across the reveals. The distinction the announcement makes, stated plainly

The traffic has been going both ways for a while. In 2023, artwork commissioned for the Duel Masters versions of Magic cards was brought back into Magic as Friday Night Magic promos — Serra Angel and Pouncing Jaguar among them, wearing art that was made for the other game.

Wizards of the Coast designed Duel Masters in 2002 and the two games have shared material ever since. What is new here is both companies running the reveal as a joint operation, with each account handling one set and directing readers to the other.

For English speakers

You cannot buy this Takara Tomy Mall ships within Japan. The window runs to 2 October, and made-to-order means there is no supply beyond what is ordered inside it. At 7,700 yen for seven cards, this is a collector's product rather than a way to get playable cards.

This is listed here because it is the kind of thing a Magic player would want to know exists, not because it is actionable.

The cards themselves are ordinary Duel Masters cards with premium art — no new mechanics, no new names. What you are paying for is the artwork and the production quality.

Card names are literal translations given alongside the Japanese. No artwork is reproduced and no card text is copied.

Updated 12 September Added the price (7,700 yen per set), the closing date (2 October), the product codes and the fixed seven-card contents. The first version said the closing date had not been announced — it had. Also added a second Magic illustrator credit.
